The story of the 'JT' Mark
De Porceleyne Fles (The Porcelain Jar) was founded in 1635.
Over the centuries numerous owners have come and gone, along with their style of wares.
In 1876 Joost Thooft bought the factory with the intention of making world class Delft Blue pottery.
Abel Labouchere was an associate of Joost Thooft since the 1860s.
Together the men created a new earthenware mixture that was stronger than the current English white earthenware.
The new product became a worldwide sensation and sold like hot cakes!
Joost Thooft began marking his wares with the JT in a jar.
This mark was first used in 1879.
When Thooft died at age 46, Labouchere became the sole owner.
The company was privatized in 1904.
In 2003 the company celebrated its 350th anniversary.
Making the Tile
The Porceleyne Fles website states: "The cloisonné tiles probably came about by combining the sectile technique (1900) with the crystal-glazed tiles for the building industry (1902).
The tiles varied in size from 10 x 15 cm to 20 x 29 cm.
Sometimes as many as 15 to 20 different, specially made glazes had to be applied to the individual segments, and as this was extremely laborious and time consuming De Porceleyne Fles was forced to stop making cloisonné tiles in 1977".
Royal Appreciation
In 1919, the Dutch government allowed the company to add 'Royal' to their name in appreciation for their work in the Dutch ceramics industry.
The Rotterdam Heraldic Shield
This tile shows with beautifully muted colors of red, gold, green, black, and white.
The center of the tile shows the heraldic shield; it has two red lions and two black lions sittiing in gold over a green/white/green tri-color emblem.
Along the sides the green leaves with red berries float in a rich white background, with the Rotterdam
name plaque at the bottom.
The tile is self-bordered with a dark brown frame.
