Manganese dioxide is the inorganic compound with the formula MnO2. This blackish or brown solid occurs naturally as the mineral pyrolusite, which is the main ore of manganese and a component of manganese nodules. The principal use for MnO2 is for dry-cell batteries, such as the alkaline battery and the zinc-carbon battery. MnO2 is also used as a pigment and as a precursor to other manganese compounds.
    Uses in Pottery
The applications include the use of MnO2 as an inorganic pigment in ceramics and in glassmaking. Manganese is a colorant using in bodies and glazes, producing blacks, browns, and purples.
Smaller amounts are easily dissolved in most glaze melts, however, around the 5% threshold, the manganese will precipitate and crystallize. In large amounts in a glaze (i.e. 20%), metallic surfaces are likely.
In glazes below 1080°C, it can give coffee color browns when used with tin.
